1916 Centenary Chapel

This chapel is conceived as a vessel of prayer floating on a mirrored sea. Protected by it’s translucent steel skin, the true form of the vessel is hinted at within. The gathered crowd awaits the arrival of the hearse to the plaza, serving as stage for a final journey. The still pool gives distance both literal and emotional from the ultimate destination. the chains remain a constant reminder of a past rife with oppression and struggle. As we descend, we become isolated from an intrusive world and our thoughts are allowed to float back to those we have lost. As the chains clink, sway, and dance, dappled light drips in from above, Steel links drape downwards obscuring all but the coffin below, the focal point of the mourner’s attention.
