Housed within a decommissioned church, Bear Market Roastery transforms a former place of worship into a contemporary space for roasting, brewing and sharing coffee. Rather than competing with the existing architecture, the intervention establishes a clear dialogue between old and new, allowing the scale and character of the original building to remain the dominant experience. A family of bespoke stainless steel elements is inserted into the historic fabric, creating a series of functional objects that organise the space while remaining visually distinct from the existing structure. The roasting process occupies the former sanctuary, with the roasters positioned where the altar once stood, placing the craft of coffee-making at the heart of the building.

Running through the project is a continuous language of folded stainless steel. Service bars for espresso, filter coffee, pastries and roasting are conceived as a coherent architectural system, complemented by modular shelving formed from folded 2mm stainless steel boxes suspended from threaded steel rods. Bespoke illuminated signage with interchangeable magnetic lettering allows the space to evolve while maintaining a consistent visual identity.

The restrained material palette reflects the industrial nature of coffee production while contrasting with the warmth and texture of the existing church. Stainless steel introduces precision and durability, while the retained timber floor softens the interior and reinforces the character of the original building. Rather than treating furniture, equipment and display as separate elements, the project brings them together into a unified architectural language. The result is a flexible working roastery where fabrication, craft and heritage coexist, demonstrating how contemporary interventions can respectfully inhabit historic structures without diminishing their presence.
