We completely gutted and refurbished this 3 bed detached house. The existing house allowed for all the living space downstairs and bedrooms upstairs arranged around a central spiral staircase. We inverted the layout of the house to maximise the liught and the view to Dublin Bay. We put all the living spaces upstairs making the most of the light, height and views and put the bedrooms downstairs. We also stripped back the existing suspended ceiling and exposed the roof beams to add height and character to the space. As the existing house was quite small and dark, we were reluctant to add partition walls to divide the different rooms upstairs. We opted instead for a new centrally positioned staircase which divided up the living and kitchen spaces and overlooked the corridor and arrival space below. This opened up views across the space both horizontal and vertically which never existing before. We also punctured a new opening at the end of the entrance corridor to create an more inviting view upon arrival of the beautiful stone walls beyond. The architectural language was simple. Timber was used on all the horizontal surfaces which contrasted with the white painted the vertical surfaces throughout.
